New to Pickleball? Here's What Actually Matters (and What Doesn't)
September 11, 2026
I am new to pickleball. Like, still-learning-the-kitchen-rule new. And I already know it's one of the most fun things I've picked up in years.
If you've been thinking about trying it but feel a little intimidated by all the gear talk, this one's for you. Here's what I've learned so far about what actually matters, what doesn't, and why you should just go play.
You don't need the most expensive paddle
Walk into any sporting goods store and you'll see paddles that cost more than a nice pair of boots. You do not need one of those to start. What you DO need is a decent paddle, because the super cheap ones make everything harder than it has to be.
I went with the Vatic Pro Carbon Fiber Pickleball Paddle, and it has been SO good to me. The sweet spot is nice and forgiving, which matters a lot when you're still figuring out where the ball is going to land on your paddle. The weight is just right for getting my returns back over the net. Carbon fiber face, foam edge walls, and it comes with its own cover. Solid middle-of-the-road pick, and beginner approved.
That's the sweet spot for a new player: not the bargain bin, not the pro-level splurge. Something decent that lets you actually learn.
Shoes make a bigger difference than you think
This is the one I wish someone had told me sooner. Shoes change how you feel WHILE you're playing and how you feel AFTER. All that side-to-side movement adds up fast, and the wrong shoes will let you know about it the next morning.
I've been wearing the Skechers Slip-In Pickleball Court Shoes and they've been a game changer. Real room in the toe box, so nothing gets squished. The cushioning honestly feels like walking on air. And they're slip-ins, so there's no bending over to lace up before a game. Court days got so much comfier once I made the switch.
If you only upgrade one thing, make it the shoes.
It's fun at any age and any athletic ability
This is my favorite part. Pickleball doesn't care how old you are or how athletic you are. The court is small, the ball is light, and the learning curve is friendly. You can be playing real games within your first hour.
I've seen every age group out there having a blast, and nobody is taking it too seriously. It's social, it's active, and it's genuinely fun. Not "fun because it's good for me" fun. Actually fun.
And yes, the outfits are part of the fun
If you've been to a pickleball court lately, you've noticed: people show up in bright, fun colors. It's basically a rule at this point. Pulling together a cute court outfit is half the reason I look forward to playing.
My go-to pieces are all things I already had on the site:
- The Leopard Pleated Tennis Skort takes you from pickleball to lunch without a costume change. Buttery soft, breathable, and if leopard isn't your thing, it comes in so many other great colors. I'm in a Medium.
- The Scalloped Skort with Pockets reads a little dressier, has mesh shorts underneath, and yes, pockets.
- The High-Waisted Wide-Leg Athletic Shorts have a 2.5-inch inseam that's a win for us shorter girls, plus REAL slant pockets.
- The Cross-Back Workout Tank is my "looks more expensive than it is" top. Cute from every angle.
Skort, tank, court shoes, bright color somewhere in the mix. Done.
You get better every single time
Here's the thing that keeps me coming back. Every time I grab my paddle, I'm a little better than the last time. Serves land more often. Returns make it over the net. Something clicks that didn't click last week.
Learning and playing has been a total blast, all the way around. So if you've been on the fence: get a decent paddle, get good shoes, put on something bright, and go. You'll be hooked by the second game.
